Your Captain and Chef
Clive Shute and Laila Stjerndrup met while sailing in Brazil in 1988, and since then have sailed around the world, managed charter yachts for five years, and have recently completed a two -year voyage to Greenland, Cape Horn, and Antarctica. We are delighted that they have accepted the positions of Captain and Chef aboard Fantasy Island for the coming season. Clive's niece, Sarah Williams, will be assisting them in order to provide you with the very best in customer service.
Clive has sailed over 90,000 miles and is an experienced, safety-conscious captain with outstanding social and interpersonal skills. He holds a commercially endorsed British RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate, as well as an Australian Ocean Yachtmaster qualification. Born and educated in England, but with an Australian father, he has spent much of his life Down Under. In 1986 he left his career as a mainframe computer engineer to sail around the world. Clive has a meticulous approach to maintenance and speaks both English and French.
He managed Holga,a 62 ft luxury charter yacht for several years, sailing her from the Grenadines to the Virgin Islands, with 23 charters a season and many repeat customers. During this time Clive and Laila dramatically improved the standard of the systems and the physical appearance of the yacht. Clive is a PADI Dive Instructor, and looks forward to showing you the fascinating underwater world of corals, fish, and marine life that are abundant in the British Virgin Islands.
Laila has worked a professional chef on both private and charter yachts from 40ft to 180ft, and has been Maitre'D and cook in some of Sydney's finer restaurants. She has a Management Certificate in Catering and Hospitality, and her international repertoire delights her guests.
Born and raised in a sailing family in Copenhagen, Denmark, Laila has sailed all her life. She is a professional chef, very creative and with an international flair. She has sailed over 85,000 miles in all latitudes and speaks English, Danish and some Spanish, French and German. In 1987 she left her job as an assistant manager with a security company to sail from Denmark across the Atlantic to Brazil, where she met Clive. She too is an RYA Offshore Yachtmaster, a PADI Dive Instructor, and also has an Advanced First Aid certificate.
Sarah Williams is a caring and fun-loving 23-year-old Australian. Like Clive and Laila, she is a non-smoker. She has worked in the hospitality industry in her native Australia, and as a camp
counselor in California. Earlier this year she sailed the 6500 mile trip from Cape Horn to the British Virgin Islands with Clive and Laila and since arriving in the British Virgin Islands she has been crewing on charter yachts to
gain further charter experience. Clive, Laila and Sarah are probably the only crew in the Caribbean who have all seen Cape Horn from the deck of a yacht!
