Mike and Roberta Haver
Your Captain and Chef
Mike and Roberta Haver are the
owners of the 72 foot sailing vessel AYACANORA. They were married in 1973 and have two
grown children. They have many years of sailing and power boating experience from the
Great Lakes, West Coast, East Coast and the Caribbean.
In 1979, they began construction
of their 40 foot Garden-design cutter. After completion in 1985, they sailed extensively
with their two children, and eventually settles in Key West, Florida. There they began
searching for the perfect boat to fulfill their dreams of chartering.
Mike was born in Nebraska. At the
age of 18, he joined the Navy and spent 10 years in the submarine service. He later worked
as a test engineer on submarines and in commercial power plants, and as a machinist in
various shipyards.
Mike has a degree in Machine
Technology, and holds a 500 ton Master License and a 100 ton sailing endorsement. Among
the many vessels he has captained are the 78 foot glass-bottom boat Discovery and
the 65 foot sailing catamaran Sebago in Key West.
In 1992, Mike entered the
Merchant Marines, serving as chief Mate of the 500 ton ocean-going integrated tug and
barge unit Energy Altair until mid-1997.
Roberta was born in Washington
state and grew up on Puget Sound, spending endless summers swimming and skiing on the many
lakes, and enjoying the abundance of seafood from the Great Northwest.
The challenge of finding exciting
new ways to prepare her favorite foods led her to a degree in Culinary Arts and
Management. Roberta graduated cum laude as a certified chef, and proceeded to
design and operate her own restaurant, The Pantry.
After several successful years,
she sold her restaurant and opened a wholesale muffin business, American Maid Muffins.
Later, having sold the muffin business, she began catering ashore and afloat. As
capable at the helm as she is in the galley, Roberta also holds a Captain's License.
